Understanding Bazi
Bazi, literally meaning Eight Characters, is a system of Chinese metaphysics practiced for over a thousand years. Also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, it uses the date and time of a person's birth to construct a chart of eight characters: four Heavenly Stems and four Earthly Branches.
Each pair of stem and branch forms a pillar, representing the year, month, day, and hour of birth. Together, these pillars create a symbolic framework for exploring personality tendencies, life patterns, and timing.
The Building Blocks
Heavenly Stems
There are ten Heavenly Stems, each associated with one of the Five Elements in either Yin or Yang polarity:
- Jia - Yang Wood (tall tree)
- Yi - Yin Wood (flower)
- Bing - Yang Fire (sun)
- Ding - Yin Fire (candle)
- Wu - Yang Earth (mountain)
- Ji - Yin Earth (garden soil)
- Geng - Yang Metal (sword)
- Xin - Yin Metal (jewelry)
- Ren - Yang Water (ocean)
- Gui - Yin Water (rain)
Earthly Branches
There are twelve Earthly Branches, traditionally associated with the Chinese zodiac animals:
- Zi - Rat - Water
- Chou - Ox - Earth
- Yin - Tiger - Wood
- Mao - Rabbit - Wood
- Chen - Dragon - Earth
- Si - Snake - Fire
- Wu - Horse - Fire
- Wei - Goat - Earth
- Shen - Monkey - Metal
- You - Rooster - Metal
- Xu - Dog - Earth
- Hai - Pig - Water
The Five Elements
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water form the core language of Bazi. Their relationships reveal balance, flow, and tension within a chart.
The Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents the core self and becomes the reference point for interpreting the rest of the chart.

In modern practice, Bazi is best treated as a symbolic framework for cultural exploration and self-reflection, not as fixed prediction.
